Each year WAURISA elects one-half of their WAURISA Board members at its annual conference in May. Due to Covid19 we were unable to hold this year’s WAURISA Board Election at the conference; however, WAURISA in accordance with its bylaws is required to hold its annual election. This year will be done online via our WAURISA Website and open on June 19^th and will close on June 29^th, 2020. Voting is open to all WAURISA members and last year’s memberships are extended until June 30^th, 2020.

The 2020 WA GIS Conference has been canceled

The 2020 WA GIS Conference has been canceled. WAURISA will issue a full refund for registration and workshop fees as soon as possible. The reservations for the conference room block have been canceled by the Hotel Murano and no action is required.

We have tentatively scheduled with the Hotel Murano for May 17-20, 2021. Please look for other announcements and communications to come as we explore innovative ways to remain close as colleagues and friends!

WA GIS Conference and Coronavirus (COVID19)

WAURISA is taking all developments concerning the coronavirus (COVID19) very seriously and will continue to closely monitor the situation. As of March 11th, Governor Jay Inslee instituted a ban on large gatherings and events of 250 people or more in King, Pierce, and Snohomish Counties for the remainder of March. Unless the ban is extended on large events into April and May, WAURISA has no plans to postpone or cancel the Washington GIS Conference scheduled May 18-21st at the Hotel Murano.

If the event is cancelled or postponed due to an extended ban our policy will be to issue full refunds to all participants. Health and safety are of the utmost importance to us so we will continue to keep you updated as we gain more information regarding measures taken to keep our members safe. We will update this message with any new developments or information.

WAURISA’s annual Washington GIS Conference is a well-established annual event attended by an average of 300 professionals and students in the geospatial industry. This event has grown beyond our capacity to manage solely with volunteers, so, for the third year the WAURISA board is looking to pay a Conference Coordinator to assist in the planning and organizing of the event.

The primary role of the conference coordinator is to work with all the conference subcommittee leads and the WAURISA Board Conference Liaison to facilitate collaborative decisions and logistics for the 2020 WA GIS Conference.

Changes to Pre-Conference Workshops

There have been a number of changes to the Pre-Conference Workshops.

Added to the list of workshops is a new offering from Geocortex –

Working Smarter with Geocortex and Web AppBuilder for ArcGIS presented by Ryan Cooney. This is a half day workshop presented in the morning of Monday, May 21.

Unfortunately, the following workshops were cancelled:

- This was moved to a regular session during the conference.

Call for Nominations to The Summit Award

Nominations are now being accepted for Washington URISA’s Summit Award, aka GIS Person of the Year. The Summit Award recognizes the "highest contribution to the Washington GIS Community". It is presented during the annual Washington GIS Conference for highest contributions by an individual to the Washington State GIS Community.

Everyone that has earned The Summit Award exuded professionalism, grace, and a get-it-done-with-a-smile attitude. This is your chance to nominate a person that exemplifies these qualities.

Criteria for The Summit Award:

¨ The nominee has changed the GIS profession in some "significant way."
¨ The person shall have practiced the profession for at least 10 years within Washington State.
¨ The nominee shall have made a significant contribution to the GIS profession and community in Washington State.
¨ The person should be known for their excellent work and successful projects in the GIS field.
¨ The nominee should have volunteered significant time for the GIS profession and community in Washington State.
¨ The nominee should not be a current WAURISA board member.

To submit a nomination, please email your submittal to nominations@waurisa.org. Nominations are due Wednesday, April 10.

Students! Here is your chance to share your original work related to GIS, geography, or geographic research by entering the Dick Thomas Student Presentation Competition and Award, the DTA. The DTA Committee has extended submission due date to March 15.

If you are chosen to present, this is your opportunity to attend the Washington GIS Conference for free, gain recognition in the professional community, raise awareness of critical issues, and be eligible to win cash prizes.

The DTA Student Presentation Competition will occur on Thursday, May 23^rd during the 2019 Washington GIS Conference at the Greater Tacoma Convention Center.

The Washington State Chapter of URISA (WAURISA) invites you to share your best poster, map, web applications or script with the broader community at the 2019 Washington GIS Conference.

This year’s poster presentation showcase will provide the opportunity to share and exhibit your creative talents, inspire your peers and potentially earn some cash in the process!

Entrees must be submitted through our online form and must meet guidelines outlined on our website. Submissions that do not meet these guidelines will not be displayed at the conference.

Fellow conference attendees will cast votes for their favorite entry for each category. The winners will receive Amazon gift card prizes. Posters are not allowed to be removed prior to 1:00 PM on Thursday, May 23. Posters left behind will not be returned. Entrants do not have to attend the conference; however, there is no guarantee their map or poster will be displayed in their absence.

Individuals chosen to present will gain recognition by their peers, raise awareness of critical issues, and identify current trends in the industry.

The Presentations Sub-Committee is seeking presenters to share a wide range of GIS topics and will select presentations, panel discussions, and lightning talks to reflect an array of interests and levels of expertise. Selection will be based on the value of the proposed topic to the audience and the clarity of the abstract.

Please submit an abstract for presenting any of the following:

Project Presentations - 30 to 90 minutes long, or
Lightning Talks - no longer than 15 minutes, or
Panels - participant list must be formed prior to abstract submittal

WAURISA’s annual Washington GIS Conference is a well-established annual event attended by an average of 300 professionals and students in the geospatial industry. This event has grown beyond the capacity of just volunteers and so for the second year the WAURISA board is looking to pay a Conference Coordinator to assist.

The primary role of the conference coordinator is to work with all the conference subcommittee leads and the Board Conference Liaison to facilitate collaborative decisions.

Keynote Speaker Announced: Ty Wooten, ENP

This year's keynote speaker will be Ty Wooten.

Ty Wooten is the Director of Education for the National Emergency Number Association (NENA). Ty is also the principal instructor for the Center Manager Certification Program (CMCP), a 40-hour course providing the essential tools for effective management of 9-1-1 centers. Before joining NENA in 2012, Ty was the President of Public Safety Consulting & Management.

He also served as the first Director of both the Hancock County, Indiana 9-1-1 Center and the Indianapolis International Airport Communications Center. Throughout his 24+ years of experience in public safety, Ty has held various positions in law enforcement—as a firefighter, EMT, and hostage negotiator.

Ann’s contribution to the Washington State GIS community has been, and continues to be, outstanding and inspirational to us all. Her drive to bring GIS professionals together to develop solutions and expand knowledge and resources has helped many throughout the region. Ann exhibits professionalism on all levels. Her drive for excellence in the GIS profession along with her outreach, volunteerism (former WAURISA President), coordination, and mentoring makes her a very worthy recipient of the WAURISA’s GIS Person of the year (2017 Summit Award winner).
